Quilted Amy Butler cushions

Remember those WIP cushions I posted about, and how it was one of my goals to complete them before taking on any further sewing projects? Well, those cushions are finally complete.

I made these out of materials I already had, as a way of making use of some old cushions we had lying around- the covers on those cushions were well beyond their use-by date, and this project allowed me to put them to better use.  I used two Amy Butler prints I had in my stash, both from the Daisy Chain collection.
These are pretty straightforward to make, and a good way to create cushions a little more interesting than a straight slip cover. I created four quilt sandwiches of fabric-batting-backing (two for each cushion), the same as I would if I was creating a full quilt. I then used free motion quilting all over the sandwich, starting in the centre and working my way out.
I then stitched up 3 sides of the cushions , inserted a cushion insert, and slip stitched the opening by hand.

I used self-covered buttons in the centre of each cushion, which I attached to each side of the cushion using a long doll needle. I found that one of the cushions was a little dense (possibly a tiny bit too small for the cover I'd made), and so getting the needle through was very tough.
I'm hoping to add a few more cushions to our bed (if Jay will let me... he's of the "what's the point of cushions?" school of thought). I'm thinking a nice grey one, for a start.

Where do you stand on cushions? For, against, or mostly indifferent?

  1. Cushion skeptics unite.

And a grey cushhion? Really? A grey one? Does Amy Butler even make grey fabric...?

P.S. Good job on the cushions!

    1. Yes, really. Grey is awesome (and neutral!).
